Deputy Interior Minister Urges Magelang Village Management to Become National Model

Deputy Interior Minister (Wamendagri), Bima Arya Sugiarto, has urged that the environmental management practices in Kampung Jambon Gesikan, Magelang City, be adopted as a model applicable to other regions in Indonesia.

He made this statement after directly inspecting the Kampung Jambon Gesikan area in Cacaban Ward, Magelang City, Central Java, on Thursday (16/4).

“This is one of the best examples of residential area improvement with environmentally friendly and sustainable principles. The village is very clean; this is what ASRI (safe, healthy, clean, beautiful) means. It must be like this,” said Bima.

Kampung Jambon Gesikan implements an integrated environmental management system, ranging from waste banks, recycling, composting, maggot cultivation, urban farming, to utilising used cooking oil to produce soap.

Bima assessed that the success of the area is inseparable from the collaboration between the local government and the local residents. The active involvement of the regional head in monitoring and motivating residents, as well as the consistency of community-level environmental managers, are key factors in its success.

He emphasised that the management in the area has been running from upstream to downstream in an integrated manner and hopes that these practices can serve as a pilot model for other regions. He also encouraged all areas in Magelang City to first adopt the same pattern before expanding to other regions.

“All 192 must be like this,” Bima stressed, referring to the number of Neighbourhood Units (RW) in Magelang City.

In the future, he hopes that every region will have measurable and sustainable environmental management standards, making it a national reference in strengthening community-based environmental management.

For information, the inspection activity was conducted together with the Mayor of Magelang Damar Prasetyono, the Head of the Magelang City Police Resort (Kapolres) AKBP Dikri Olfandi, and the Chairman of RW IV in Kampung Jambon Gesikan.
