Regional autonomy is also about independence. If we evaluate its 30-year journey, the biggest homework at present is to increase regional fiscal capacity and economic independence.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) Bima Arya Sugiarto assessed that enhancing fiscal capacity and regional economic independence has become the biggest homework in the 30 years of regional autonomy implementation.

“Regional autonomy is also about independence. If we evaluate its 30-year journey, the biggest homework at present is to increase regional fiscal capacity and economic independence,” said Bima during the commemoration of the 30th Regional Autonomy Day at the Ministry of Home Affairs Headquarters, Jakarta, on Monday.

He emphasised that regional autonomy is not merely about granting authority to local governments, but also the responsibility to build independence in managing resources and financing development.

Bima added that regional autonomy is an ongoing process that requires continuous improvement, particularly in strengthening regional economies.

In addition, he highlighted the importance of the role of regional heads in facing various challenges that are not only local, but also national and global.

“Besides challenges at the local and national levels, regional heads also face increasingly complex global geopolitical dynamics,” he stated.

Bima hopes that strengthening fiscal capacity and regional economic independence will continue to be promoted so that the implementation of regional autonomy can provide real benefits for public welfare.
