Deputy Interior Minister Bima Urges Regional Councils to Oversee Bureaucratic Transformation in Local Areas
Deputy Interior Minister (Wamendagri) Bima Arya Sugiarto has urged regional representative councils (DPRD) to play an active role in overseeing bureaucratic transformation in local areas. He conveyed this during a presentation at the Advanced Course for Regional Leaders and Chairs of DPRDs Across Indonesia, held in the Sudirman Room at the Military Academy (Akmil) in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (16/4/2026).
In his presentation, Bima highlighted the challenges in the bureaucracy, which he assessed as not fully adaptive to changes. This condition has the potential to hinder the effectiveness of development programmes, even with changes in local leadership.
“Elected and appointed leaders come and go, but the bureaucracy remains in place,” he stated.
In response to these challenges, the government is promoting the adoption of the statecraft concept as a new approach to government management. This concept requires civil servants to work more intelligently, skilfully, and reliably in facing increasingly complex challenges.
Furthermore, Bima emphasised that various presidential priority programmes under President Prabowo Subianto must be seriously monitored at the local level to deliver tangible impacts for the community. He assessed that the success of these programmes heavily depends on synergy between local governments and DPRDs.
According to him, national priority programmes must not only be implemented but also ensured to stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and improve community welfare if managed well.
On that occasion, Bima affirmed that DPRDs have a strategic role in ensuring the effectiveness of bureaucratic transformation and programme implementation. Through their budgeting, legislative, and oversight functions, DPRDs are expected to guide policies to hit their targets.
“DPRDs are key institutions… the torch is in your hands, ladies and gentlemen,” he asserted firmly.
Further, he specifically urged DPRDs to actively monitor the implementation of priority programmes in the regions, from governance to the benefits received by the community.
