Deputy Industry Minister says East Java consistently third-largest automotive market
Surabaya (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Industry (Wamenperin) Faisol Riza said East Java consistently ranks third nationally in automotive sales with a market share of 9.7 percent, below Jakarta at around 32-35 percent and West Java at 16-18 percent.
“East Java has always consistently ranked third in terms of our national vehicle sales. Last year, its market share was 9.7 percent,” Faisol said at the opening of the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) Surabaya 2026 in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday.
According to him, the size of East Java’s market share shows that the province plays an important role in supporting the development of the national automotive industry, where in 2024, vehicle sales in the region reached 83,900 units, out of a national total of 865,723 units.
Meanwhile, in 2025, national vehicle sales were around 803,000-840,000 units and East Java’s market share was around 9.1-9.5 percent, or around 73,000-79,000 units.
On the other hand, he said East Java’s position as a major automotive market is one of the important reasons for holding GIIAS in Surabaya, which was previously held at ICE BSD City Tangerang.
Furthermore, he added that the performance of the national automotive industry throughout 2026 has also shown positive developments that strengthen optimism towards the domestic vehicle market.
He explained that wholesale vehicle sales in the January-July 2026 period reached 517,000 units, while retail sales in that period reached 511,000 units.
Meanwhile, sales in July 2026, Faisol said, wholesale reached 81,000 units, an increase of 4.5 percent compared to June and a jump of 33.3 percent compared to July 2025.
“I am optimistic that the domestic sales target will exceed 850,000 units this year so that we can almost be certain that our domestic sales will once again rank first in the region,” he said.
Therefore, he hopes that Gaikindo and all automotive industry players will continue to improve performance so that national vehicle sales can approach the psychological figure of one million units as in the heyday of the automotive industry.
On the other hand, Deputy Industry Minister Faisol said strengthening the automotive industry also needs to be done to increase the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the national economy.
According to him, the processing industry grew 5.32 percent in the second quarter of 2026 and contributed 16.83 percent to gross domestic product (GDP).
“The processing industry is a contributor to GDP of 16.83 percent or equivalent to Rp1,102 trillion,” he said.
He hopes the automotive industry can maintain its expansion rate while increasing exports so that it contributes more to GDP and national economic growth.
