Students are at the forefront of promoting human rights values to the public, and universities play a crucial role in overseeing the drafting of human rights laws through academic and scientific approaches.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Human Rights Minister Mugiyanto has called on universities in Banten to actively monitor the revision of the 1999 Human Rights Law to address contemporary human rights issues.

“Students are at the forefront of promoting human rights values to the public, and universities play a crucial role in overseeing the drafting of human rights laws through academic and scientific approaches,” Mugiyanto stated in Jakarta on Wednesday.

During a public lecture at the Convention Hall of UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten in Serang on Monday (25 May), Mugiyanto said the revision of the Human Rights Law is necessary as current regulations are deemed unable to respond to new challenges.

He noted that power relations are becoming increasingly complex with the emergence of non-state actors, including corporations, which have significant influence on public life.

Therefore, he said, human rights governance needs to be strengthened operationally so that national development is not solely focused on investment and economic growth.

“National development must not only be oriented towards investment and economic growth but must also ensure that humans remain at the centre of all national policies,” he said.

Furthermore, future human rights approaches should not merely be normative but must be integrated from the policy-making stage, development planning, to national budget allocation.

He also mentioned Indonesia’s international recognition, including its election as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

This collaboration aims to strengthen education, research, and community service based on human rights while promoting academic studies and policy recommendations related to human rights advancement in Indonesia.
