Deputy Home Minister Stresses Importance of Sustainability in Leadership

Deputy Home Minister (Wamendagri) Bima Arya Sugiarto has stressed the importance of sustainability in leadership as a key to successful development. He highlighted a tendency among regional heads to prioritise their own programmes while neglecting the achievements of previous leaders, arguing that continuity is a fundamental foundation for a nation’s progress. “The key to the success of Singapore, China, and others is sustainability,” Bima said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. He made the remarks during a welcome dinner for the Third Batch of the 2026 Regional Leadership Consolidation Course (KPPD) at the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) in Jakarta on Tuesday. He cited Singapore’s leadership transition as an example of maintaining a consistent development direction, where a change of leader does not sever ongoing programmes but instead strengthens ideology and the development agenda. “The leadership transition in Singapore not only runs smoothly but also reinforces ideology and development programmes. There is no sectoral or programmatic ego,” he explained. Bima added that a leader should not only pursue existence, achievement, or recognition but must also be able to inspire others and provide space for contemplation. He expressed hope that the learning process undertaken by KPPD participants, including training at Lemhannas and learning from Singaporean leaders, would become part of a journey towards more meaningful leadership quality.
