Deputy Governor Rano identifies Karang Taruna as a driver for Jakarta's development
Jakarta — The Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, stated that Karang Taruna holds a strategic role in preparing a productive, creative, and socially conscious younger generation to participate in Jakarta’s development.
Rano made these remarks while attending the 66th Anniversary of Karang Taruna at Sasana Krida Bakti Karang Taruna, Kampung Melayu, South Jakarta, on Saturday.
“For Jakarta, productive, creative, and innovative human resources are the capital needed to move towards a competitive global city. I hope this productive human resource emerges from the younger generation, specifically the members of Karang Taruna present here today,” Rano said.
Based on population data from the first half of 2026, he noted that the productive age group accounts for 71.63 per cent of Jakarta’s total population of nearly 11 million people. This condition presents a significant opportunity for Jakarta to utilise the demographic bonus as a force for development.
In his view, this opportunity must be accompanied by improvements in human resource quality, skills, and the provision of broad opportunities for participation so that the younger generation can make a tangible contribution.
Rano also assessed that the creative economy represents a vast space for Jakarta’s youth to develop their potential and independence. These opportunities are available through arts, culture, film, digital technology, and various other creative fields.
“Jakarta’s youth must be given space to develop their potential, whether through arts, culture, film, digital technology, or the creative industry. Interestingly, the number of sub-sectors in the creative economy has increased from 17 to 21, including film, automotive, and voice-over work. Therefore, the creative economy landscape is very, very large,” he explained.
According to Rano, youth empowerment is becoming increasingly important as Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary in 2027. City development requires not only infrastructure and economic growth but also a younger generation possessing competence, creativity, and social concern.
He emphasised that Karang Taruna remains a strategic partner of the Jakarta Provincial Government in building a youth ecosystem that is productive, empowered, and provides real benefits to society.
“Happy 66th Anniversary to Karang Taruna. With the spirit of uniting, moving, and impacting, let us give birth to a younger generation that is caring, creative, adaptive, and brings progress to the community and the nation,” Rano concluded.
