Deputy Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Urges Lawyers to Master New Criminal Procedure and Penal Codes
Deputy Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections (Wamenko Kumham Imipas) Prof Otto Hasibuan has called on all lawyers to master the new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) and Penal Code (KUHP). “I hope all my colleagues will earnestly return to studying it,” he said in a press release in Jakarta on Sunday (12/4/2026). Otto also shared the key secret to success as a lawyer. “The main recipe for a lawyer is to be intelligent and honest,” he stated while serving as a speaker at a hybrid seminar titled “The Role of Advocates in Law Enforcement and Justice Based on the New KUHAP” organised by Unissula Semarang, attended by thousands of participants. According to Otto, Peradi continuously improves the quality and professionalism of lawyers through various ongoing programmes. “Because if you are not intelligent, not honest, and your quality is not improved, the victims will be your clients, namely the public seeking justice,” he said. As the General Chairman of Peradi, Otto stressed that this is the foundation that must be upheld in practising the profession as a lawyer. “Honesty is lesson number one. As a lawyer, upholding high ethics, being honest to the law, honest to the client,” he remarked. Otto noted that the single bar is inevitable as it is regulated in the Advocates Law. Peradi is the sole unified body (single bar) that carries out eight state authorities, including PKPA and appointing lawyers. “Only Peradi has that authority, no other organisation does,” he said.
