Deputy Chair of DPR Commission II Pushes for Discussion of Election Bill: Stages to Begin by End of 2026

Deputy Chair of DPR Commission II, Zulfikar Arse Sadikin, hopes that the discussion of the Election Bill can take place this year. He wants the revision of the law to be proposed as a DPR RI initiative in 2026.

“Clearly, there is a desire for the preparation to be completed soon and approved as an initiative bill, with discussions also to be conducted promptly, considering that by the end of this year we will enter the stages of the 2029 election, namely the recruitment of election organisers,” said Arse at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (17/4/2026).

Arse stated that the discussion of the Election Bill is hoped to proceed soon, given that the recruitment process for election organisers will be carried out by the end of the year. Nevertheless, DPR RI must also consider other factors, including the country’s condition, in the discussion of the revision of the Election Law.

“Well, there is such a hope. But we must pay attention to all matters, we must consider everything. How is the Commission II environment, how is the DPR, how are the parties, and outside, how is our country’s situation,” he said.

Arse also explained that the draft and academic paper for the Election Bill are not yet available. Therefore, he continued, the meeting that was originally scheduled with the DPR Expertise Agency has been redirected to a leadership meeting with the heads of faction groups (kapoksi).

“Actually, it’s not cancelled, but by agreement of the leadership, the meeting is not an internal one, but a leadership meeting with kapoksi,” he stated.

According to him, the discussion of the Election Bill is currently at an early stage in the form of material enrichment. Discussions will only be held after the materials prepared by the DPR Expertise Agency are completed.

“We see that it’s not yet time for an internal meeting because what is being made is just like a paper,” said Zulfikar.

“If the Working Committee is already underway, what is worked on by the Expertise Agency will increasingly lead to the academic paper and bill draft, then we will bring it to the internal Commission II meeting,” he added.
