JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Deputy Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has reminded that all digital platforms, whether local or international, must comply with the registration requirements as Electronic System Operators (PSE), including Wikipedia.

Compliance with these regulations is part of efforts to maintain orderly and lawful governance of the digital space in Indonesia.

“The regulations on the obligation to register as a PSE are important instruments designed to ensure orderliness, accountability, and protection of public interests,” Dave told Kompas.com on Saturday (18/4/2026).

According to him, there are no exceptions for digital platforms in fulfilling these obligations.

“Therefore, every digital platform, whether local or international, including the Wikimedia Foundation as the manager of Wikipedia, needs to respect and comply with these provisions as a form of respect for Indonesia’s legal sovereignty,” he said.

Nevertheless, Dave acknowledged that Wikipedia plays a strategic role as an open knowledge source widely used by Indonesian society.

The Golkar politician assessed that restricting access to these services could potentially cause unintended impacts, particularly in terms of literacy and openness of information.

“Wikipedia has become a primary reference in education, research, and daily information needs. Reducing access to this service would certainly cause unintended impacts on society,” he stated.

“The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs needs to prioritise a communicative and persuasive approach, by opening space for dialogue with the Wikimedia Foundation,” Dave concluded.

It was previously reported that the Wikimedia Project, including Wikipedia, announced that its services could be blocked in Indonesia within seven working days if it does not register as a Private Scope Electronic System Operator (PSE).

The announcement was made through the official Indonesian Wikipedia account on platform X on Wednesday (15/4/2026).

“The websites of the Wikimedia Project, including Wikipedia, will be blocked by Kemkomdigi within 7 working days if they do not register as a Private Scope PSE in Indonesia,” stated the post uploaded by Wikimedia.
