Deported Indonesians face military probe

DENPASAR: Udayana Military commander Maj. Gen. Supiadin Yusuf said on Monday his office was investigating 61 Acehnese and Papuans who were deported from East Timor last week.

"We are still trying to find out whether these people simply wanted to become citizens of East Timor or had other motives for being there," Supiadin said.

Responding to questions about whether the Acehnese and Papuans were in East Timor to study how the former province won independence from Indonesia, Supiadin only said the possibility was being looked into.

"Maybe that is one of the reasons, but I don't think that is possible because Aceh and Papua are integral parts of the Republic of Indonesia," he said. --JP
