Depok's Wide Pavement Project Sparks Traffic Congestion Complaints

The Depok City Government is currently working on pavement projects in several locations. However, the project on Jalan Pemuda has attracted attention from various parties because it is considered too wide, causing the main road for motorists to become increasingly narrow.

Based on observations at Jalan Pemuda, Depok, on Thursday (6/8/2026), traffic congestion is common at the junction from Jalan Margonda. Vehicles are often at a standstill trying to enter and exit the road.

The pavement project is being built as a continuation from Jalan Kartini. However, the size of the pavement, which is currently in the brick-laying phase, appears as wide as the one on Jalan Kartini.

Workers are still carrying out construction at the site. Equipment, debris, and other building materials are still visible amidst the passing vehicles.

The width of the pavement causes vehicles from both directions to frequently get stuck. When two vehicles pass from opposite directions, one must give way.

A resident named Damar (41) complained about the project. According to him, the project is making the road even narrower.

“Oh dear, it’s already congested. Making it smaller with a pavement just makes it even narrower,” Damar said on Thursday (6/8).

He said traffic jams frequently occur at the location. He complained that the project is causing long tailbacks.

“It’s often congested here, and if this is added, the queue will be even longer. Make it smaller, this is too wide,” he said.

Another resident, Meli (35), said the project needs to be reviewed. The width of the pavement is making the road increasingly narrow.

“The government should take a look here, Mr Mayor. It’s very wide, sir, please review it again. The road is becoming narrow, you can see for yourself,” she said.
