Depok Police Warn of 'Pocong Terror' Scams as Precision Patrol Team Steps Up Night Patrols

Depok Metropolitan Police have intensified night-time patrols through their Precision Patrol Team (3P) to counter new criminal tactics involving ‘pocong terror’. The preventive measure follows the rise of social media reports and growing public concern in Depok City.

Team 3P leader, Inspector IK Suwita, stated that officers have been deployed to patrol high-risk areas, focusing on cracking down on individuals using pocong costumes to intimidate residents and facilitate criminal acts.

“Depok Metropolitan Police are deploying personnel to patrol and crack down on anyone using the pocong modus operandi to commit crimes or disturb residents,” Suwita said on Monday (25 May 2026).

Police analysis indicates that perpetrators deliberately pose as pocong to create instant panic. When residents are frightened, they tend to leave valuables unattended, leave doors unlocked, or stop vehicles in isolated areas.

Perpetrators exploit victims’ panicked psychological state to commit theft, motorcycle snatching, and threats with sharp weapons. Suwita stressed that legal action will be taken if criminal elements are found.

In addition to targeting pocong modus operandi perpetrators, Team 3P has heightened vigilance against other public order disturbances. On Monday (25 May 2026) early morning, a sweep operation was conducted from Margonda Road to Grand Depok City (GDC), with officers conducting vehicle checks in a humane yet firm manner.

Although no sharp weapons or narcotics were found in the latest operation, officers did identify several riders lacking proper vehicle documentation. Residents are urged to remain calm and vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity in their areas immediately.
