Depok Man Lures Child with Game Top-Up Promise, Steals Phone, Detained by Residents
A video showing a man suspected of defrauding a child being detained by residents has circulated. The suspect’s modus operandi was to lure the victim with the promise of a game top-up before stealing the victim’s mobile phone. The incident took place on Sunday (14/6/2026) in Sawangan, Depok, West Java. According to residents, the suspect allegedly approached children who were playing games on their phones. “(The suspect) then asked them to go to a kiosk to top up their game for a certain reason,” said AKP Hendra, Head of Public Relations for the Depok Metro Police, when contacted by journalists on Tuesday (16/6). Initially, the suspect asked to hold the victim’s phone. The victim then realised the suspect’s intention to take the phone. “(The victim) immediately screamed for help. Residents who witnessed the incident quickly gave chase and managed to detain the man,” he explained. Upon inspection, three mobile phones were found in the suspect’s bag. The suspect was immediately handed over to the police for further action. Hendra explained that the victim did not file a police report. The case was resolved through restorative justice. “The victim did not make a report, restorative justice,” he concluded.
