Depok goes green

DEPOK: In conjunction with Environment Day on Nov. 12, the local administration kicked off a regreening program by planting hundreds of fruit trees around the town, located south of Jakarta.

Mayor H. Badrul Kamal expressed hope that the program would revive the satellite city's function as water catchment area for Jakarta.

Depok, formerly a vast forest, is now a developing town with numerous housing complexes and business districts. The administration recently announced a new mission to be an environmentally friendly town for settlement, trade and service. -- JP
