Depok Community and Government Declare Commitment to Human Rights Civilisation

Residents together with the Depok City Government, West Java, have declared a commitment to make human rights values the foundation of community life and governance in order to realise an inclusive, just, safe and dignified city.

The declaration was delivered during a human rights capacity-building event themed ‘Towards a Depok City with a Human Rights Civilisation’ at Balai Rakyat, Depok, West Java, on Wednesday (12/8), involving RT/RW administrators, PKK mobilisers, youth leaders and community organisations.

Special Staff to the Minister of Human Rights for Digital Transformation and Media Communication, Thomas Harming Suwarta, in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, appreciated the commitment of the community and the Depok City Government, but stressed the need for follow-up through policies and concrete actions.

The commitment encompasses respect, protection, fulfilment, enforcement and promotion of human rights (P5HAM).

‘We appreciate the initiative of the community and the Depok City Government in making human rights values the foundation. We just need to ensure that this commitment becomes concrete action, both in policy formulation and implementation, including concrete efforts within the community so that the ideal of a human rights civilisation is truly realised,’ he said.

According to Thomas, the Ministry of Human Rights encourages the P5HAM principles to be directly felt by the public through improved compliance with human rights principles in the community, business and government spheres.

‘A society with a human rights civilisation is one that is inclusive, non-discriminatory, promotes human dignity, acts fairly, sides with vulnerable and minority groups, and protects the environment and sustainable life,’ he said.

He assessed that the implementation of this commitment needs to be directed towards the protection of vulnerable and minority groups, prevention of discrimination, fulfilment of citizens’ rights, and development policies that make human rights a primary consideration.

Thus, the declaration does not stop as a statement of commitment, but becomes the basis for building governance and social life that respects the dignity of every citizen.
