Depok City Government Suspends Diversity Tourism Programme After Participant Dies in Bus Accident

A participant in the Wisata Keberagaman programme, named Sopiah, died after being crushed by a bus in Banten. The Depok City Government has temporarily suspended the programme. Bojongsari Police Chief Kompol Fauzan Thohari confirmed the incident occurred whilst the victim was taking part in the Wisata Keberagaman programme. The incident took place on Saturday (4/7) in the bus park of the Banten Grand Mosque. The victim and her child were about to board their bus after a pilgrimage. However, before the deceased could get on, a bus that was not part of the Serua Urban Village group drove past. The victim tried to move aside to avoid the bus, but her body was crushed. A scream was then heard from the victim. The victim was taken by public transport to the nearest community health centre for medical treatment, but her life could not be saved. She was referred to a larger hospital, but passed away en route. Her body was subsequently taken by ambulance to her family home in Serua Urban Village. Following the incident, the Depok City Government is temporarily halting the Wisata Keberagaman programme. Deputy Mayor Chandra Rahmansyah conveyed this while paying his respects at the victim’s residence in Serua, Bojongsari, Depok, on Sunday (5/7). Chandra stated that based on discussions and direction from the Mayor of Depok, he has requested all community units in Depok City to temporarily postpone the diversity tourism activities, including those who have not yet departed. Chandra confirmed a thorough evaluation of the programme will be carried out, especially regarding safety aspects. He also expressed his deepest condolences to the victim’s family on behalf of the Mayor and the Depok City Government.
