The Depok City Government in West Java has officially launched a project to widen Jalan Raya Pemuda and Jalan Raya Engram in Sawangan Baru Urban Village, Sawangan District. This strategic move is a concrete effort to resolve the chronic traffic congestion that has long been a major complaint of residents in the area.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Supian Suri emphasised that the construction and widening of these two roads are key to alleviating traffic density along Jalan Raya Sawangan. “The reconstruction of this alternative route connects Jalan Raya Pemuda as the end point and Jalan Engram as the starting point,” he stated on Wednesday (17/6).

Supian said the infrastructure project represents a shared commitment to address the community’s needs regarding congestion in Sawangan. He expects traffic density on Jalan Raya Sawangan to decrease significantly once the road section is completed. “This is our collective commitment to fulfil the hopes of the community. Today, we begin widening and constructing Jalan Raya Engram and Jalan Raya Pemuda in Sawangan Baru Urban Village as a solution to ease congestion in the Sawangan area,” he said.

To realise the project, the city government has allocated a substantial budget from the regional budget (APBD), amounting to Rp40 billion for land acquisition and Rp30 billion for physical construction. “The total APBD for land acquisition and construction reaches Rp70 billion,” he explained.

Technically, Jalan Raya Engram will be built with a length of approximately 872 metres and a right of way width of 11.5 metres. Meanwhile, Jalan Raya Pemuda will have a width of around 10.5 metres and will be equipped with pedestrian facilities on both sides to improve comfort and safety for pedestrians. “The increased road capacity is expected to smooth vehicle flow, which has been hampered by limited traffic space in the Sawangan area,” he said.

The widening and construction project will not stop at Jalan Raya Engram and Jalan Raya Pemuda. The city government has designed further interventions to comprehensively address transportation issues in the region. “The Depok City Government will continue to develop the widening up to the Parung Bingung T-junction, the Jalan Raya Keadilan intersection, and the Tugu Batu intersection. In addition, the city government will also build a bridge under the Parung Bingung road section to create two lanes,” he stated.

Supian confirmed the project is targeted for completion as soon as possible so that its impact can maximally resolve the years-long congestion in Sawangan. According to calculations, the budget required for land acquisition for the Parung Bingung T-junction, Jalan Raya Keadilan intersection, Tugu Batu intersection, and the construction of the bridge under the Parung Bingung road section is estimated at Rp110 billion. Furthermore, if the project is extended to connect to main roads and toll road access, an additional land acquisition budget of around Rp270 billion and physical construction costs of approximately Rp50 billion will be needed. “This is the budget we need to solve the congestion in Sawangan,” he revealed.

The construction and widening of Jalan Raya Sawangan was a campaign promise of Depok Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Supian Suri and Chandra Rahmansyah. The commitment to widen and repair the frequently congested Jalan Raya Sawangan has been incorporated into the 2026 Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD).
