Depok Car Free Day Quieter During Ramadan as Residents Enjoy Greater Exercise Freedom

Car free day (CFD) activities continue on Jalan Margonda Raya in Depok during Ramadan, though this week’s event has been noticeably quiet.

An observation of the location on Sunday, 1 March 2026 at 08:00 WIB revealed few parking spaces in use and fewer parking attendants offering spaces on pavements. Few residents were walking before entering the CFD area.

Entering the CFD route, the usual bustle of food vendors is largely absent. Residents appeared more focused on jogging, cycling, or walking for exercise.

One resident, Reni (27), said she rarely attends CFD due to the typically crowded conditions. However, she deliberately brought her mother to CFD during Ramadan for more comfortable exercise.

“I don’t come often—not every week—because it’s usually crowded. I thought with Ramadan it would be quiet, so I brought my mother to exercise,” Reni told journalists.

She noted that Depok’s CFD during Ramadan is more conducive to exercise due to fewer vendors. CFD should be an occasion for residents to exercise, she added.

“It’s nice and quiet like this. It should always be this quiet so people can jog and exercise properly. Too many vendors usually means the focus shifts to eating rather than exercising,” she said.

Another resident, Tiko (40), brought his dog for a healthy walk at Depok’s CFD. He said the atmosphere is more welcoming during Ramadan.

“I just wanted to have some fun and get some exercise myself. I brought my dog for company. It feels nice and quiet like this, and my pet has more freedom,” he said.

He expressed satisfaction at being able to exercise comfortably at Depok’s CFD during Ramadan.

“It’s good and bad—I can’t eat street food. But it’s excellent like this, really nice for exercising,” he concluded.
