Denza Name to Change to Danza? BYD Indonesia Responds
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - BYD Indonesia has finally provided clarification regarding the appearance of the name Danza amid the trademark dispute over Denza, which has been decided by the Supreme Court (MA). Head of Public and Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia, Luther Panjaitan, emphasised that the company respects the applicable legal process while acknowledging that the Danza trademark has indeed been registered in Indonesia. “We respect the applicable legal process, but this process has not yet concluded. The final conclusion does not state that the Denza trademark does not belong to BYD; rather, there is a difference in the legal entity targeted,” Luther told Kompas.com on Saturday (18/4/2026). “BYD believes in a fair and balanced legal system, and we are currently studying and considering the next steps. However, it is confirmed that we hold the Danza trademark in Indonesia,” he said. Nevertheless, Luther has not confirmed whether Danza will be used as a replacement for Denza in Indonesia, including the possibility of it being temporary. “For now, we can only provide information up to this point; further developments will be announced promptly,” he stated. On the other hand, BYD continues to assert that globally, it is the rights holder of the Denza trademark, which has been recognised in various countries. “Globally, BYD is the rights holder of the Denza trademark, recognised in various countries. Situations like this are vulnerable to occur when entering new markets, so this also serves as an introduction for us to the dynamics of investment in Indonesia,” Luther said. The application is registered under number IDM001414073 since 11 August 2025 for class 12, covering vehicles and their components, such as cars, buses, electric vehicles, chassis, and trucks. Additionally, there is another registration under number IDM001426542 for class 37, which includes services for repair, maintenance, and charging of electric vehicles. As background, this dispute began when BYD introduced its premium electric vehicle line Denza in Indonesia in January 2025, which then triggered a legal controversy regarding trademark ownership. In its lawsuit, BYD requested recognition as the legitimate owner of the Denza trademark globally, while also designating it as a well-known trademark. The company also assessed that there is substantial similarity with the registered trademark owned by PT Worcas Nusantara Abadi, and accused the defendant of bad faith in the trademark registration process.
