Denying Speculation by Former Minister Mahfud MD, National Police Chief and Attorney General Share Smiles

The leaders of the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) have confirmed that relations between the two law enforcement institutions remain positive. The affirmation was made following news of legal tensions that culminated in the naming of former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah as a corruption suspect by a joint investigation team from the Metro Jaya Regional Police and the Corruption Crime Task Force (Kortas Tipidkor). Public rumours had circulated that the two institutions were feuding, complicating their already awkward relationship. Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD also fuelled speculation of a non-synergistic relationship, claiming the National Police Chief and the Attorney General found it difficult to meet in a single forum. “Do not think that we (the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police) are rivals, that we are versus (fighting each other). No,” said Attorney General ST Burhanuddin in front of National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo at the Attorney General’s Office in Jakarta on Monday (13/7/2027). Burhanuddin admitted that he has known Sigit personally for a long time. “We have known each other personally for a long time,” said Burhanuddin, who addressed the National Police Chief as ‘friend’. He said their respective careers had led them to become leaders of the Adhyaksa Corps and Sigit as National Police Chief. Despite the heated law enforcement situation in recent days involving the police’s actions against former Jampidsus Febrie Adriansyah, Burhanuddin confirmed there was no resentment or harsh friction causing the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police to clash in inter-corps rivalry. “Do not also think that because of certain things that happened yesterday, we are not maintaining our usual friendly relations,” Burhanuddin said. He stated that the National Police Chief’s visit to the Attorney General’s Office was to ensure there was no stagnation in communication and to maintain synergy between the law enforcement institutions. “And we discussed how to think about future improvements,” Burhanuddin added. National Police Chief Sigit conveyed a similar message. General Sigit emphasised that his visit to meet Attorney General Burhanuddin was like a visit from a younger brother to an older brother. “My mentor, the Attorney General, Mr Sanitiar Burhanuddin. Alhamdulillah, today we were honoured to be received for a friendly gathering and audience regarding many matters,” Sigit said. The National Police Chief revealed that the most important outcome of the roughly 40-minute conversation with the Attorney General was a mutual agreement to improve the quality of cooperation between the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police. “We discussed how, moving forward, the prosecutor’s office and the police, as part of the criminal justice system, must be strengthened and reinforced,” Sigit said. The National Police Chief rejected the notion of ongoing rivalry between the prosecutor’s office and the police following the naming of Febrie as a suspect. “The clear point is that the prosecutor’s office and the police are one big family, and we will continue to maintain the solidity and synergy of this big family,” the National Police Chief said.
