Densus 88 Arrests Suspected Terrorists in Ciamis and Lampung

Jakarta (ANTARA) — The National Police’s Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Counter-terrorism unit arrested suspected terrorists in Ciamis, West Java, and in Lampung on Monday (20 July).

Densus 88 spokesperson Senior Commissioner Mayndra Eka Wardhana said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday that the suspect arrested in Ciamis was a man with the initials AR, while the one arrested in Lampung had the initials H.

“These actions are part of the law enforcement process based on the results of in-depth investigation into propaganda, recruitment and incitement activities carried out through social media platforms,” he said.

He said that during the arrests, investigators found the dissemination of material containing narratives of radicalism and terrorism, as well as the legitimisation of violence.

He stated that Densus 88 is currently conducting intensive questioning to establish the roles of both suspects.

“We affirm that every police action is carried out on the basis of valid evidence, in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations, while upholding the principle of presumption of innocence and respect for human rights,” he said.

Mayndra further urged the public to remain active in combating the spread of extremism, radicalism and terrorism in digital spaces.

“The public is expected not to be easily influenced by content containing incitement to hatred, the justification of violence, or terrorist group propaganda,” he said.

He also asked the public to report to law enforcement authorities if they encounter suspicious activity on social media or digital platforms.
