Denpasar Police Chief Clarifies Viral Video Alleging Phone Seizure
Denpasar Police Chief Commissioner Leonardo David Simatupang has denied allegations that he seized a mobile phone from a reported individual claiming to be a journalist, as depicted in a viral video circulating on social media. The incident occurred at the Kuta Police Station.
He explained that the man, identified as FV, was the reported party in a case of alleged threats and assault that took place at the Bali Sun Tropical Hotel & Spa in Legian, Kuta, Badung Regency, on Saturday evening, 11 July 2026. According to the complainant and several witnesses, the dispute began with an argument and escalated into alleged threats and the throwing of objects. The reported individual is also suspected of brandishing an object resembling brass knuckles and issuing threats to the complainant. Officers subsequently secured both parties at the Kuta Police Station for processing in accordance with legal procedures.
The Police Chief stated that when at the Kuta Police Station, the reported individual appeared to still be under the influence of alcohol and was carrying a bottle of liquor. The individual claimed to be a journalist but was unable to present a press card, stating that his identification was in his hotel room. Around 2:00 a.m. local time, the Denpasar Police Chief visited the Kuta Police Station to directly monitor the handling of the case and ensure the situation remained conducive. During this visit, he requested that video recording activities be temporarily halted to maintain order and facilitate the examination process.
He stressed that this request was not an act of seizing a mobile phone nor an attempt to obstruct journalistic work. ‘I requested that the recording or video activity be temporarily stopped to maintain order and the smooth handling of the case. This request was not an act of seizing the individual’s mobile phone and was in no way intended to obstruct journalistic work,’ he stated. Leonardo added that at the time, investigators were also unable to question the reported party optimally due to his condition. Meanwhile, a urine test conducted by the Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit showed a positive result for benzodiazepines. However, he noted that this finding requires further investigation, including the possibility of prescription drug use or other medical indications.
