The number of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Denpasar City, Bali, reached 33,036 units in 2025. This figure marks an increase from 32,856 businesses recorded in 2024. The culinary sector remains the most dominant, with a total of 11,087 enterprises.

“MSMEs have grown the most in the food sector. We can see this from events like exhibitions and festivals that rely on MSMEs. For example, when we curate around 100 participants, we receive 300-400 registrations. Food businesses are indeed simpler to start and manage,” stated I Dewa Made Agung, Head of the Denpasar City Cooperative and MSME Office, in an interview with the detikBali team on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

Based on 2025 data, MSMEs in Denpasar are predominantly micro-enterprises spread across various sectors and districts. These include 3,687 culinary businesses in West Denpasar, 3,087 fashion enterprises, 91 education ventures, 806 automotive businesses, 3,487 agribusinesses in North Denpasar, 297 internet technology firms in South Denpasar, and 1,044 other sector enterprises in North Denpasar.

“We track them via NIB (Business Identification Number). However, an NIB doesn’t necessarily mean the business is new; it could be an established one that has only recently obtained its permit,” Agung explained.

“Because all businesses are actually required to have an NIB. But for very small ones, with limited information, they get confused about the process, especially older entrepreneurs. They often feel it’s not necessary, so they rarely bother,” he added.

According to Agung, the NIB plays a crucial role in recording and helps the government reach local businesses, particularly when they face difficulties.

“We provide assistance. Previously, we could directly help process NIB applications for MSMEs that came to us. But now, with system changes, we can’t handle the processing anymore, though we still offer guidance. We also conduct outreach to markets,” Agung said.

Education and training (Diklat) for MSMEs are provided variably according to their needs in business management, ranging from product development and food processing to financial systems.

The Denpasar City Cooperative and MSME Office also offers supporting facilities for product marketing. “Marketing is what they really need. I’m confident their products are good, but how can they level up without proper marketing? We provide product photography and podcast spaces to assist their marketing strategies. There’s also an MSME corner featuring products exclusively from our assisted MSMEs,” Agung stated.

The Denpasar City Cooperative and MSME Office emphasises that MSME registrations in the area are only for holders of Denpasar-specific Identity Cards (KTP). “Our financing is for our residents; otherwise, it could cause issues during checks. Other districts like Badung and Gianyar have their own programmes,” Agung clarified.
