Denpasar (ANTARA) - The Mayor of Denpasar, Bali, I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, has emphasised Waste-to-Electricity Processing (PSEL) as the gateway to clean energy transition in urban areas, as well as a strategic solution to urban waste problems.

This commitment is demonstrated through the acceleration of PSEL construction, which is now entering the initial implementation stage, marked by the signing of a cross-sector cooperation agreement (PKS) in Jakarta on Tuesday, led by the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, and attended by several central and regional officials.

Jaya Negara stated that the PSEL development is not merely understood as a technical solution for waste management, but as part of the transformation towards a clean energy system based on local potential.

According to him, through this approach, waste is no longer viewed as an environmental burden, but as an energy source that adds value to society.

He added that the integration of waste management and renewable energy production is an important step in supporting the development of low-emission and sustainable cities.

Jaya Negara stressed that the success of PSEL implementation is highly determined by policy consistency, infrastructure readiness, and collaboration between the central government, local government, private sector, and society.

Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, described PSEL as part of the national agenda to strengthen energy and environmental resilience amid increasing pressures from urbanisation.

He affirmed that the central government is pushing for the acceleration of similar projects in various major cities to optimise the renewable energy potential from urban waste.

“PSEL is designed as an integrated solution that not only reduces waste but also produces energy that is economically valuable and environmentally friendly,” he said.

This programme also refers to Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025 on waste handling through energy conversion based on environmentally friendly technology.

With the start of this implementation stage, the Denpasar City Government has reaffirmed its commitment to becoming one of the pioneering regions in the development of clean energy based on waste in Indonesia.

In the future, PSEL is expected not only to reduce the burden on final disposal sites but also to serve as the foundation for a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable urban energy transition.
