Denpasar — The Mayor of Denpasar I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, together with Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa, has issued a message to the community ahead of the Holy Day of Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr, which this year fall in close proximity to one another.

The Holy Day of Nyepi for the Hindu New Year of Caka 1948 will be observed by the Hindu faithful on 19 March 2026, with a series of ceremonies commencing from Melasti (purification), Tawur Agung Kesanga (grand purification ritual), Nyepi (day of silence and self-reflection), and concluding with Ngembak Geni (fire purification).

Mayor Jaya Negara, speaking in Denpasar on Monday, called upon all Hindu faithful and local residents to carry out the series of Nyepi observances as sacred offerings (yadnya) to strengthen devotion and spiritual commitment whilst honouring religious and civic duty.

He also urged the community to utilise the Nyepi observance as an occasion for self-introspection and self-examination (mulat sarira) whilst maintaining values of tolerance and respect for diversity.

Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Fitr following the completion of fasting during the full month of Ramadhan.

“We invite all segments of society to find meaning in Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr as acts of self-control and self-examination, and as forms of purification of the natural world with the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam towards a progressive Denpasar,” he stated.

According to the Mayor, the observance of Nyepi coinciding with Eid al-Fitr provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen harmony and tolerance amongst the various religious communities in Denpasar.

Deputy Mayor Arya Wibawa called upon all residents to enhance their vigilance and self-awareness as part of personal reflection in community life.

He also urged the community to strengthen the spirit of menyama braya (brotherhood), mutual assistance, shared belonging, and the preservation of social harmony amidst diversity.

“Greetings on the observance of the Holy Day of Nyepi for the Hindu Year 1948 of Caka in 2026 to all who celebrate, and Happy Eid al-Fitr to the Muslim faithful. May this occasion serve as an opportunity for personal introspection to enhance spiritual devotion in accordance with each person’s individual calling,” he said.
