Denpasar Adopts Jakarta's Strategy for Sanur Low Emission Zone

Denpasar, as the centre of activity in Bali Province, is facing serious challenges related to traffic density and air pollution, with the number of motor vehicles reaching 1.85 million units. In response, the city government has established a regulation for a Low Emission Zone (Kawasan Rendah Emisi/KRE) in Sanur, making Denpasar the first city in Indonesia to adopt such a regulation at the local level. As part of the implementation, the KRE action plan drafting team conducted a study visit to Jakarta to learn from best practices. Head of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Ketut Sriawan, stated that intervention through the transport sector is the fastest route to sustainability, emphasising that the Sanur Low Emission Zone, as a tourism destination, requires good air quality to ensure visitor comfort. Jakarta has previously implemented a similar concept, such as in the Kota Tua area where private vehicle access is strictly limited. Irani Handalia from the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency stressed that the key to success is cross-sector collaboration under a single command mandate, involving logistics, SMEs, and pedestrian infrastructure. Made Jony Sasrawan added that the arrangement of Tebet Eco Park prioritised pedestrians and cyclists without completely closing vehicle access. Her Pramtama, Principal Architect at US&P, cautioned that Denpasar must not only focus on beautification but also address fundamental issues like traffic congestion in Sanur before integrating with other areas. I Made Vikananda from WRI Indonesia explained that good area design facilitating walking, cycling, and shuttle services will ease the transition away from private vehicles and reduce emissions.
