Denmark thanks Canada for support amid United States' Greenland claim
Copenhagen — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen thanked Canada on Sunday 15 March for its support to Denmark amid United States claims over Greenland.
“I am extremely grateful for all the assistance we have received regarding Greenland and Denmark. We have experienced unacceptable pressure from America,” Frederiksen said during the Nordic-Canada Summit in Oslo.
Frederiksen added that Canadian support, together with Nordic countries in Europe, had been crucial in enabling Denmark to remain steadfast over Greenland.
“One of the reasons we have been able to remain steadfast in upholding values that are very common is not only because of support from our good friends in the Nordic countries of Europe, but also with partners abroad, especially you, Mark,” Frederiksen said, referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
On 4 March, US Deputy Secretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby said America was seeking to gain control over Greenland and remained optimistic about the prospect.
Danish and Greenlandic authorities have warned Washington against seizing the island, stating that they demand respect for their territorial integrity.
