Denied Money, Man in Pati Sets Fire to His Own Parents' House
A man with the initials MI (27), suspected of setting fire to his own parents’ house and causing material losses estimated at Rp100 million, has been arrested by the Sukolilo Sector Police in Pati, Central Java. The fire occurred on Saturday, 13 June, at around 10.40 pm local time. The incident began when MI allegedly asked his father, identified as M (61), for money, but the request was not fulfilled, sparking an argument. From the initial investigation, the suspect is believed to have ignited the fire using a lighter near a gas stove in the kitchen of the victim’s house in Kedungwinong Village, Sukolilo District, Pati Regency. The flames then caught onto bamboo webbing, or gedek, around the kitchen, causing the fire to grow. Residents who saw the flames coming from the kitchen of the victim’s house immediately sought help and reported the incident to the police. Following up on the report, Sukolilo Police personnel went directly to the location and coordinated with the Pati Regency Fire Department. Firefighters, together with Sukolilo Police officers and local residents, then worked to extinguish the fire. After battling the blaze for some time, the fire was successfully put out, followed by a cooling down process to ensure no remaining hotspots. As a result of the incident, the kitchen area of the house along with a number of household furnishings were damaged. Although there were no casualties, the material loss suffered by the victim is estimated to be around Rp100 million. According to information gathered by officers, the incident was allegedly triggered by a dispute between the victim and his biological son. Before the incident, the suspect reportedly asked his father for money to fund his migration to Sulawesi on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. However, after his request was not met, the suspect became emotional and recklessly set the fire. After conducting an investigation and gathering statements from several witnesses, officers immediately moved to secure the suspected perpetrator. On the same night as the incident, MI was apprehended at his home to undergo further examination. He is currently being held at the Sukolilo Police station for further investigation into the alleged criminal act of burning his parents’ house.
