Dengkeng River Embankment Breach in Cawas, Klaten, Begins Repairs
Repair work began on the breached embankment of the Dengkeng River in Dukuh Jetakan, Desa Bawak, Kecamatan Cawas, Klaten (Central Java) on Thursday, 5 March, with the involvement of various elements of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Police (Polri), BPBD, BBWS Bengawan Solo, as well as volunteers and local residents, in a coordinated emergency response to minimise flood risk.
The breach of the Dengkeng River embankment occurred on Tuesday evening, 4 March, after heavy to moderate rain from 16:30 to 23:00 WIB. As a result, river water flooded residential areas.
As stated by Captain Inf Sukimanto, the commander of Danramil 20/Cawas, the emergency repair of the breached embankment in Dukuh Jetakan, Desa Bawak, Kecamatan Cawas, is part of efforts to counter flood surges on the Dengkeng River.
‘The emergency repair of the breached embankment in Dukuh Jetakan, Desa Bawak, Kecamatan Cawas, is being accelerated to anticipate and prevent downstream floods during this extreme rainy season,’ he said.
A range of agencies is involved in the emergency response, including Kodim 0723/Klaten, the Polres, BPBD, BBWS Bengawan Solo, as well as volunteers and communities.
According to Sukimanto, the acceleration of the embankment repair is a preventive measure to reduce flood risk in the residential areas. He added that, so far, there has been no negative impact on the community.
‘We are accelerating the repair of the breached embankment through a gotong royong approach. This work demonstrates the strong synergy among the TNI, Polri, related agencies, volunteers, and the community,’ he said.
The spirit of togetherness and mutual aid shown by the community is the main strength in addressing the region’s challenges. Those values should be maintained.
‘With this embankment repair, it is expected to minimise potential flood risks and provide safety and comfort to residents in the Dengkeng River catchment,’ he concluded. (E-2)
