A demonstration in the Malioboro area of Yogyakarta briefly grew tense tonight. A number of black-clad protesters tried to enter the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Provincial Legislative Council building and the DIY Governor’s Office, which were guarded by police.

DetikJogja’s observations at the scene on Wednesday night (28 October 2026) showed some protesters burning an object in the middle of the road, while others set off firecrackers. Shops in Malioboro had already closed, and protesters were seen scattering along Malioboro Street.

Earlier, students from several universities in Yogyakarta and members of the public had gathered at Jogja’s Zero Point that afternoon. They held a demonstration to mark Youth Pledge Day on 28 October 2026.

At 5pm local time, DetikJogja observed that the protesters were all dressed in black and carrying banners expressing demands to the government on a range of issues.

The demonstration had proceeded peacefully, with protesters taking turns to put forward their demands in an orderly manner.
