Chairman of the Democratic Party Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said President Prabowo Subianto is serious about anticipating and mitigating global geopolitical conditions that could threaten domestic stability.
He said this is evident from the involvement of former presidents and vice presidents. AHY regards the move as a serious effort to build cross-generational consensus among leaders.
‘We interpret it as a serious endeavour, a serious effort. It means he also wants to explain positions and policies, including foreign policy and domestic policy, clearly for the leaders of the nation to understand,’ AHY told reporters.
According to him, Prabowo not only expresses views but also listens to various inputs. ‘Last night the President listened carefully; there were many inputs that are important and relevant. I think this will continue to enrich him in making important or strategic policy decisions,’ added AHY.
Former presidents, he added, understand the complexity of decision-making at the highest level of the country, which is often a dilemma between national interests and global responsibilities.
Therefore, the views of national figures are heard and absorbed by Prabowo as one solution taken by the Head of State. This is in line with the Demokrat’s view that the nation’s interests are non-negotiable.
‘We have national interests, interests we must fight for for the people and for our country. We can talk about sovereignty, we can talk about security, we can talk about welfare for our own people. On the other hand, as responsible global citizens, we cannot be apathetic, we cannot be indifferent,’ AHY said.
On that occasion, the sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is also said to have sent guidance to Prabowo. The effort to ensure fiscal, economic, energy, and food resilience, AHY said, is a message conveyed to the Head of State.
Furthermore, he revealed that Prabowo also asked national figures to prepare various worst-case scenarios following the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. According to AHY, in a meeting at Istana Merdeka the night before, the President invited all participants to think far ahead, including calculating the impact of the conflict that could spread to Indonesia.
‘Mr President, Mr Prabowo Subianto has invited us all to really consider what will or could happen,’ AHY said.
He stressed that one of the main concerns is the potential widening of the conflict to disrupt global energy routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
‘Several worst-case scenarios must also be imagined. Including effects, for example, when protests continue and spread in the Middle East, including in the Hormuz Strait which is a vital global energy corridor. This will have certain impacts on our economy, in the region, and we must also ensure our energy and food security is not overly disrupted,’ he said.
Amid global uncertainty, AHY said Indonesia must stay focused on development and the welfare of the people. He hopes that in the coming weeks there will be de-escalation and a peaceful approach that can be accepted by all parties.
‘We hope in the coming weeks there will be de-escalation and a peaceful approach that is also more widely accepted by all sides. It is not easy, but there are always ways, there is always a path for those who earnestly strive,’ AHY concluded. (Mir/P-3)
