Democrats Rated Better on Economy Than Republicans for First Time in a Decade

Washington (ANTARA) - American voters now view the Democratic Party as better economic managers than the Republican Party for the first time in nearly a decade, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday (3/8).

Around 37% of registered US voters surveyed said the Democratic Party had a better approach to the American economy, compared with 36% who chose the Republican Party.

A further 27% of respondents said they were unsure or believed another party would do a better job, the poll found.

The report noted that the Republican Party had maintained its advantage on the economy for most of President Donald Trump’s first term in 2017-2021, throughout the four-year term of former Democratic President Joe Biden, and into Trump’s second term.

Trump himself cited immigration and inflation as the two main issues behind his 2024 re-election, repeatedly asserting that he was more capable than the Democrats of managing the US economy.

The poll, conducted from Wednesday (29/7) to Monday, also found that Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 35%, down from 37% in the previous Reuters/Ipsos survey carried out last month.

“Economic anxiety is usually bad news for the party in power. When people worry about paying bills, buying fuel or putting food on the table, they blame whoever holds power,” Christopher Galdieri, a political science professor at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, told Xinhua.

“With Donald Trump in the White House and Republicans controlling Congress, they are the ones who will bear the brunt of voters’ concerns,” Galdieri said.
