Jakarta, KOMPAS.com — Secretary-General of the Democratic Party, Herman Khaeron, says President Prabowo Subianto is preparing strategic steps to respond to the prolonged war between Iran and the United States (US)–Israel. “Although we are confident that the Prabowo Subianto administration has also taken strategic steps to address challenges across various aspects — political, economic, defence, security, social — related to the impacts caused in the last three months by the war,” Herman told reporters at the Democratic Party (DPP) headquarters in Pegangsaan, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (21 May 2026). While opening the discussion “Global Economic-Political Impacts After Three Months of the Iran versus US-Israel War: What Mitigation Steps Does Indonesia Need to Take?”, Herman also voiced optimism about Indonesia’s economic growth under Prabowo’s leadership. “If yesterday we followed what was stated by President Prabowo Subianto, we can grasp that psychologically, we are optimistic that in 2027 there will be a remarkable increase in economic growth,” Herman said. Meanwhile, government spending is projected to reach 13.62% to 14.8% of GDP. According to Herman, the government also estimates the budget deficit will remain within a safe range, namely around 1.8% to 2.4% of GDP. “This is what I consider important as well; the speaker will convey whether the assumed figures set by the government will be achieved or not given the current economic situation, with the global economy that is still uncertain and lacks dynamism,” he emphasised. Herman added that the government projects Indonesia’s economic growth in 2027 to be in the range of 5.8% to 6.5%. He noted that growth of 6.5% occurred during the era of the 6th President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). “If growth of 6.5% occurs, that would reflect the SBY era. On average, 6.5% means that the people prosper, their incomes are sufficient, schooling is smooth, and defence and security are stable,” he said. He also mentioned street robberies that have been haunting the public. He also touched on social and economic conditions currently, including the rising number of crimes that often appear on social media. “One of the indicators of a country whose economy is not in good shape is an increase in crime. Is this correlated with today’s economic situation? Of course, that is not my remit as part of this event,” he said.
