Democratic Politicians Demand Transparency on Trump's Golden Dome Project
Washington - A number of Democratic Party lawmakers on Wednesday urged the administration of United States President Donald Trump to provide more detailed explanations regarding the plan to build the ‘Golden Dome’ missile defence system. The group of legislators, led by Senators Edward Markey and Jeff Merkley along with House Representatives John Garamendi and Don Beyer, sent a letter to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth requesting clarification on the mission, capabilities, cost, and strategic implications of the system. The request comes as Congress is debating President Trump’s proposed defence budget of 1.5 trillion US dollars for fiscal year 2027, amid increasing scrutiny of the Golden Dome, which is one of the administration’s flagship programmes. The legislators cited the latest estimate from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) stating that the cost of building the Golden Dome could reach 1.2 trillion US dollars, while the resulting capabilities are considered far below what was promised. ‘This is unacceptable. Before spending one more dollar of taxpayer money on the Golden Dome, the Department of Defence must share the system’s plan and objectives,’ the legislators wrote in the letter. The letter stated that while some technical specifications may indeed need to be classified, the administration has not provided adequate justification for withholding information about the system’s overall architecture, mission requirements, and targeted performance. Questions posed to the Pentagon include the number of missiles the system is designed to intercept, the plan for allocating the 185 billion US dollars in Golden Dome funding proposed by the administration, the estimated total project cost over the next 20 years, and the possibility of building a third interceptor missile system site on the East Coast of the United States. The legislators also requested an explanation of how the administration anticipates the response of rival nations such as China and Russia to the deployment of the Golden Dome, and whether the system could potentially complicate broader arms control efforts. The letter was also signed by Senators Chris Van Hollen, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Chris Murphy, as well as House Representatives Jim McGovern and Bill Foster. The group of legislators asked the Pentagon to provide a response no later than 30 June.
