Democrat Party Secretary-General Herman Khaeron stated that his party will support whatever decision President Prabowo Subianto makes, particularly regarding mounting pressure for Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP) forum.

He expressed confidence that Prabowo, as Head of State, has appropriate considerations when making decisions, especially concerning Indonesia’s membership in the forum initiated by US President Donald Trump.

“Our position is aligned with the president. Ultimately, whether to continue or consider other options regarding the BoP, we remain supportive of the president’s policy,” Herman said at the Parliament, People’s Consultative Assembly, and Regional Representative Council complex on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Since last week, calls for Indonesia to withdraw from the BoP have been amplified by various groups including students, civil society organisations, academics, universities, and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

Through an MUI advisory letter numbered Kep-28/DP-MUI/III/2026, the MUI urged the government to revoke Indonesia’s BoP membership. The council argues that the Trump-backed forum is ineffective in achieving true Palestinian independence. This assessment is reinforced by Trump’s joint military operations with Israel against Iranian territory.

Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, head of MUI’s foreign relations division, characterised Trump’s attacks as concrete evidence that the US president is actually a destroyer of peace rather than its advocate.

“Therefore, the BoP is increasingly losing moral, political, and even legal legitimacy because it has proven useless for creating genuine peace, let alone justice,” Sudarnoto stated in a written statement on Sunday, 1 March 2026.

Beyond the MUI, the Central Advisory Board of the Justice Prosperity Party (PKS) also urged Prabowo to withdraw Indonesia’s BoP membership.

Mulyanto, head of PKS’s Central Advisory Board, stated that US-Israeli military operations against Iran have objectively changed the strategic context that underpinned the BoP’s establishment.

“We believe a comprehensive and serious evaluation of our BoP membership is urgently needed,” Mulyanto said via WhatsApp message on Thursday, 5 March 2026.

Rather than maintaining peace, he argued, the United States has provoked conflict through its attacks on Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei last weekend.

“Evaluating our BoP membership is not an emotional stance, but a rational step,” Mulyanto stated.

Prabowo made the decision to join the BoP while attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Thursday, 22 January. In the presence of Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Prabowo signed the BoP charter, formally signalling Indonesia’s agreement to join the US-initiated forum, which is closely aligned with Israel.

The BoP is claimed to address conflicts in various regions worldwide, including Gaza in Palestine.
