Democracy, Bekasi style
Democracy, Bekasi style
From Warta Kota
The election of the regent of Bekasi recently was marked by the losers being allowed to outrageously exert such pressure on the election committee that it annulled the outcome of the polls.
Bekasi security officers, of which there are 1,600, were nowhere to be seen during the election so that the crowds of candidates' supporters were able to turn this important event into a circus.
The overturning of the election result, which represented the wish of the majority of voters, is strongly believed to have been tainted by bribery. The question thus arises: Is this some sort of new model of democracy?
The minister of home affairs should seriously look into what happened in Bekasi so that the real winner will not be deprived of his victory by such tactics.
