Democracy and foreign interests
From Bisnis Indonesia
The Indonesian Military (TNI) bill does not lead to a TNI that
conforms to principles of democracy, according to observers from
the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
To my knowledge, the principles of democracy in Indonesia have
not yet been established. No descriptions have ever been made of
the type of democracy suitable to Indonesia. Democracy remains
one of the global issues used by liberal nations to liberalize
the world.
Our multiethnic and pluralistic society, with its diverse
characteristics, needs a consultative approach. The liberal
democracy of the West is formatted to suit the Western
sociocultural constellation. Indonesia, with its Pancasila
ideology, has a nationalist identity emphasizing tolerance and
solidarity.
The situation now developing in Indonesia with the practice of
western democracy is just confusing. The type of democracy in
this reform period is a form of penetration by universal value
systems and norms, including the universal interests of liberal
countries.
Similarly, the national media, which should be responsible for
and play an active role in the achievement of national goals,
ostensibly voices ideas of reform for the nation's future, but
this is simply a guise to serve other interests.
In brief, there is no need to voice populist attitudes while
only searching for power and profit, risking the fate of the
entire nation.
