Demo in Front of the DPR, Private Madrasah Teachers Demand Appointment as ASN
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Groups of private madrasah teachers from various regions staged a protest demanding equality and welfare on par with teachers in state schools in front of the DPR building, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (20 May 2026).
One speaker in the action, who is also a representative of the Board of Supervisors of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGSI), Muhammad Zen, said the first demand is to push for private madrasah teachers to obtain an affirmative policy to become civil servants (Aparatur Sipil Negara, ASN) and government employees with work agreements (PPPK).
“If the honourary teachers in state schools are to be appointed as ASN or PPPK by the end of 2023, then private-school teachers, both in madrasah and general private schools, should also be appointed as PPPK and ASN,” Zen said in his speech.
According to Zen, post-amendment rules must provide certainty on teachers’ welfare.
“Remember! That those who contribute to the nation’s education are not only state teachers,” he said.
“The presence of private foundations, and private madrasah teachers, is among the main contributions to the nation because they educate our children from families who are less well off,” he explained.
Therefore, he urged that revisions to the Teacher and Lecturer Law and the National Education System Law must guarantee salary welfare.
The teachers call for equal treatment and welfare on a par with state school teachers.
“We must ensure that the laws in this country — the Education Law and the Teacher and Lecturer Law — ensure that Indonesian teachers are prosperous,” Zen said.
The teachers’ demonstration began at around 13:00 WIB. At around 14:10 WIB, the teachers’ representatives were informed that they would be received by a member of Commission VIII of the DPR RI.
