Dell to open 2nd KL plant
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): U.S. computer firm, Dell, will open a
second plant in Penang in February which is expected to increase
the company's output in the Asia-Pacific region by five times, a
news report said on Friday.
The new factory will be the third in the region by Dell which
has an existing plant in Penang and in Xiamen, China.
The new Dell plant at Bukit Minyak would produce mainly
notebooks intended for sale in the U.S., said Lim Ghou Choong,
the material logistics head of Dell Asia Pacific Sdn. Bhd.
"We decided to set up a new plant in Bukit Minyak because of
the increasing sales orders from all over the region. The orders
are so huge that we have run out of space now," he was quoted as
saying by the New Straits Times daily.
With the new plant running from February, Dell is expected to
ship out about 10 million units of desktop computers and
notebooks, he said.
Dell set up operations in Penang in 1995 at its current plant
in Bayan Lepas.
