Jakarta (ANTARA) - Internal medicine specialist at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI), Dr. Anindia Larasati, Sp.PD, FINASIM, has stated that kidney failure is influenced by causative factors including dehydration and other diseases such as hypertension.

Anindia explained that kidney failure is divided into acute kidney failure, which is usually influenced by triggering factors like dehydration.

“For instance, if there is an infection or severe dehydration due to lack of fluids, and we address the causative factor, we expect kidney function can return to normal,” she said in Jakarta on Monday.

“Long-standing, uncontrolled hypertension gradually disrupts kidney function, causes complications in the kidneys, and eventually leads to chronic kidney disease,” she added.

Acute kidney failure is kidney damage that occurs suddenly within a matter of days. Meanwhile, chronic kidney failure is a condition that occurs when the kidneys suffer severe damage over a long period, or more than three months, according to the Directorate General of Advanced Health Care at the Ministry of Health.

Conversely, if a patient experiences chronic kidney failure due to factors that cause a prolonged decline in kidney function, such as hypertension or diabetes mellitus, the patient will require extended haemodialysis.

“In acute kidney failure, there may be a specific cause that leads to temporary kidney function impairment. However, there are also patients with chronic kidney failure who require haemodialysis,” Anindia stated.
