Defense chiefs to meet in RP

PHILIPPINES: Defense chiefs of the 10-member Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will meet this week in the
Philippines to explore ways to boost security cooperation, a
government statement said on Monday.

The fourth ASEAN Chiefs of Defense Informal Meeting (ACDFIM),
to be held on Thursday through Saturday in Manila, will discuss
security challenges facing the region, particularly terrorism,
the statement said.

"Through the ACDFIM, the member-states are able to develop
plans of actions that would implement a number of agreed
cooperative techniques which would result in continuous provision
of practical contributions to Southeast Asia's peace and
stability," it added.

ASEAN consists of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and
Myanmar (Burma). --DPA
