Defendant Priyo Sentenced to Life Imprisonment, Here is the Prosecutor's Stance

The defendant in the premeditated murder of a family in Indramayu Regency, Priyo Bagus Setiawan, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict was heavier than the sentence demanded by the public prosecutor, who had sought 20 years in prison. This was revealed during a trial held at the Indramayu District Court on Friday (3/7/2026). The verdict was handed down by a panel of judges chaired by Wimmy D Simarmata. The Head of the Indramayu District Prosecutor’s Office, Niko, through the public prosecutor who is also the Head of the General Crimes Section, Eko Supramurbada, stated that they respect the panel of judges’ decision. ‘The prosecutor previously demanded a prison sentence of 20 years, while the panel of judges imposed a life sentence. We respect the decision and considerations of the panel of judges. That is the panel of judges’ assessment of the defendant Priyo Bagus Setiawan,’ said Eko when met after the trial at the Indramayu District Court on Friday (3/7/2026) evening. He explained that all charges brought by the public prosecutor were proven by the panel of judges. Namely, the first primary cumulative charge of Article 459 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of the Criminal Code concerning participation in premeditated murder, and the second cumulative charge of Article 80 paragraph (3) of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection in conjunction with Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Adjustments regarding violence against children resulting in death. According to Eko, the panel of judges’ considerations also emphasised a sense of justice for the victims. Moreover, there were elderly and child victims in the case. ‘Justice for the victims, particularly the five victims, including the elderly and children, was a consideration conveyed by the panel of judges in imposing the life sentence,’ he said.
