Defence University hopes young Jayawijaya generation will receive full scholarships
Wamena (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Defence University (Unhan) hopes that young people from Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Pegunungan, will obtain full scholarships at the defence institution to help improve the human resources of the local community.
Dean of Unhan’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr Ferdik Sukma Wahyudin, said in a written statement in Wamena on Sunday that under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, the widest possible opportunities have been opened for the nation’s brightest young people to pursue education at Unhan, particularly those from Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Pegunungan.
“When the President was still Defence Minister, he established faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Mathematics and Natural Sciences at undergraduate level. All these faculties offer full scholarships, including dormitory accommodation and other learning necessities such as laptops for every child of the nation, especially the sons and daughters of Papua,” he said.
According to him, Unhan has a special affirmative action programme for Papuan youth to continue their studies at the university.
“The President currently hopes that Papuan children will pursue studies in Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Mathematics and Natural Sciences. And in accordance with the President’s directive, everything is free of charge,” he said.
“Of course, to enter Unhan one must meet certain criteria, including an IQ of 120, an average grade of 80, strong mental and ideological character, and for those wishing to enter the medical programme, Mathematics and Biology scores of at least 90 in the fifth semester of senior secondary school, a TOEFL score of 500, and sound physical and mental health,” he said.
He added that President Prabowo Subianto’s policy requires that Papuan youth be prioritised for study at Unhan.
“In addition to the programmes I mentioned, there are also three-year diploma programmes including ship machinery, agriculture and plantation management, all on full scholarships at Unhan. Unhan operates under the Ministry of Defence,” he said.
He noted that those eligible to register for the affirmative action undergraduate programme at Unhan are senior secondary school graduates from the past two years, namely 2024 and 2025.
“The President’s policy is that children from eastern Indonesia are prioritised and receive learning facilities such as laptops, dormitory accommodation and pocket money — everything is provided through to employment,” he said.
