The Ministry of Defence (Kemhan) has revealed the reasons behind the mandatory Military Basic Training (Latsarmil) for prospective managers of the ‘Red and White’ Village/Sub-district Cooperatives (KDKMP) and ‘Red and White’ Fishermen’s Cooperatives (KNMP). The measure is intended to ensure that managers possess high discipline and mental resilience when working under pressure.

The Head of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) at the Ministry of Defence, Major General TNI Ketut Gede Wetan Pastia, stated that the state defence and managerial training is focused on character building. According to him, integrity and professionalism are crucial because the managers will be handling the circulation of public funds at the village and fishermen’s level.

“This training is directed at building character, discipline, leadership, integrity, cooperation, responsibility, professionalism, the ability to work under pressure, and a spirit of service to the community,” Ketut said during a press conference at the Ministry of Defence office in Central Jakarta on Saturday (27/6).

Ketut emphasized that strengthening the people’s economy through cooperatives is an integral part of national resilience. With strong leadership spirit, cooperatives are expected to become robust economic drivers in rural areas.

Responding to concerns regarding the intensity of physical activities, Ketut stressed that the Latsarmil is not aimed at producing soldiers. The primary focus remains on mental development, fighting spirit, and problem-solving abilities for cooperative managers.

Regarding reports of participants dying during the training process, the Ministry of Defence stated it will conduct a thorough evaluation. The ministry is committed to taking preventive measures and adjusting training materials to suit the physical condition of each participant in the future.
