The decision to establish Alert Status 1 by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander is assessed to have no impact on geopolitics or geo-economics. This was stated by Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

According to him, the readiness measures undertaken by the state defence agency are part of a geostrategic approach. Sjafrie said this was intended to assure the public that Indonesia is in a safe and secure state.

“What society actually needs is to feel safe and secure,” he said at the Defence Ministry office in Jakarta on Thursday, 12 March 2026.

Sjafrie stated that public comfort must address fundamental needs including food, clothing, and shelter. Therefore, he urged the public not to worry about the TNI’s implementation of Alert Status 1.

He further noted that Alert Status 1 is terminology commonly used by military personnel regarding readiness duties. “Our national duty is to establish national policy and the TNI Commander’s responsibility is to determine operational policy,” he said.

Previously, a telegram document from the TNI Commander regarding Alert Status 1 was signed by TNI Commander Assistant for Operations (Asops) Lieutenant General Bobby Rinal Makmun in Jakarta on 1 March 2026. The document contained seven important instructions for the TNI, ranging from orders to mobilise personnel and weapons systems to deploying troops for patrols in strategic locations in Jakarta.

Alert Status 1 remains in effect from the date the telegram was issued until completion. “This telegram constitutes an order,” according to the document obtained on Saturday, 7 March 2026.

TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto stated that Alert Status 1 was implemented as a precautionary measure. According to him, this is a standard practice adopted by the Indonesian military.

Agus noted that Alert Status 1 is military terminology that is commonly used. The TNI frequently implements Alert Status 1 for rapid reaction forces during natural disaster management operations, he said.

He gave the example that if a military regional command (Kodam) establishes Alert Status 1 for a battalion due to a natural disaster in its area. Additionally, Agus stated that the TNI would test personnel readiness and assess material mobilisation requirements under Alert Status 1.

Agus said the mobilisation of tactical vehicles and troops from regions to Jakarta in recent weeks is also part of this testing. “That is standard procedure for Alert Status 1,” he said when asked whether the measure was related to the Middle East conflict, at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
