Defence Minister Sjafrie Urges TNI Soldiers to Maintain Good Relations, Support Communities in Papua
The Indonesian Defence Minister, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, has instructed all TNI personnel stationed in Papua to maintain synergy and positive relations with local communities. The directive was given during a direct briefing to soldiers of Battalion Yonif TP 861/Maleo Kamur in Wanam Village, Ilwayab District, Merauke Regency, South Papua, on Saturday, 23 May 2026.
Sjafrie reminded that all military operations are funded by the state through public money, so soldiers must ensure their presence brings positive impact and addresses local challenges. “All equipment and facilities used by soldiers come from the public, so each soldier must always maintain good relations with the community,” he stated in a release on Monday, 25 May 2026.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline, restraint, and avoiding actions that could upset local residents. Sjafrie noted that the TNI is a people’s army, born from and serving the people, and will eventually return to civilian life.
He urged soldiers to remain steadfast in upholding core military values, including Sapta Marga, the Soldier’s Oath, and the Eight TNI Duties, while fulfilling their constitutional duty to safeguard national sovereignty.
Sjafrie explained that his visit to this remote part of Indonesia was to personally assess the troops’ conditions and boost morale. “My presence aims to inspire and appreciate the young soldiers serving in operational areas,” he said.
Although Yonif TP 861 is a training unit focused on basic military skills development, Sjafrie stressed there is no excuse for reduced readiness. “All personnel must remain fully prepared as operational soldiers,” he insisted.
Given the geographical location at Indonesia’s easternmost tip, Yonif TP 861/Maleo Kamur soldiers are expected to stay vigilant against complex operational challenges. Sjafrie instructed unit commanders to maintain cohesion, sharpen tactical combat skills, and strengthen internal camaraderie without regard to ethnic or regional backgrounds.
Sjafrie also referenced other cases involving TNI members, including high-ranking officers. The Yonif TP concept is a new initiative within the Army, integrating military duties with regional development. Sjafrie affirmed that TNI soldiers’ responsibilities extend beyond specific operational areas to encompass the protection of all national interests.
