Defence Minister Sjafrie States Dayak Tribe Will Receive Privileges for TNI Recruitment

Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has stated that there will be adjustments to the requirements for members of the inland Dayak tribe who wish to join the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).

Sjafrie mentioned that certain privileges will be granted to the inland Dayak community. “Yes, opportunities will be requested for the inland Dayak tribe to join the TNI; for those who are shorter, we will provide a little privilege,” Sjafrie told reporters at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 31 August 2026.

Meanwhile, the Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), General Maruli Simanjuntak, explained that members of the Dayak tribe are fundamentally permitted to register as TNI soldiers. Furthermore, there is flexibility for those possessing tattoos, as they are considered part of their tradition.

“Yes, it has always been allowed. There is no issue with that. Since tattoos are part of tradition, they are more permitted,” said Maruli.

However, Maruli noted that, so far, there have been no known applicants from the Dayak community possessing such traditional tattoos. “So far, no one like that has registered. We will look for them later,” he added.

Maruli emphasised that not all members of the Dayak tribe have tattoos. Therefore, he believes that the presence of traditional tattoos should not be an issue in the soldier recruitment process.

“The Dayak tribe does not all have tattoos. So, there is actually no problem; we just do not know if there is interest yet. We will look further and ensure it,” he explained.

He mentioned that the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) actually desires representation from various regions across Indonesia. This is considered vital, especially as the TNI is currently undergoing personnel expansion.

“We are happy to have representatives from all regions across Indonesia. Especially now that we are increasing personnel. If we can have more, it would be even better,” concluded Maruli.
