Defence Minister Reviews National Car Project Progress in Subang
Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on Wednesday inspected the development of the National Car Project in Subang Regency, West Java, to observe first-hand the progress of the manufacturing facility construction and the readiness of the national automotive industry ecosystem. During a working visit to the site of the future national car factory, designated as a national strategic installation, Sjafrie received a progress update from PT Pindad President Director Sigit Santosa, who outlined development in three phases from 2026 to 2028. Santosa stated the plan for an integrated industrial zone initially targets a production capacity of up to 50,000 vehicle units per year by 2028, as part of a long-term vision towards a capacity of 300,000 units per year. ‘We have, for several years, been investing in human resources for this national project, at the planning, execution, and higher levels,’ he said. The national car development zone in Subang is planned to cover approximately 539 hectares as an integrated automotive manufacturing ecosystem, encompassing factory facilities, offices, testing facilities, design and development facilities, and other necessities. In the initial stage, development is focused on a 60-hectare area with a production capacity target of 50,000 vehicle units per year, while full operational capacity is 300,000 vehicle units annually. ‘The National Car Zone is a strategic installation of significant value in supporting the strengthening of national industry, technological mastery, and the development of an integrated manufacturing ecosystem,’ he said. He also received a briefing on the planned location for the main production facilities, including the manufacturing area, vehicle engineering centre, testing facilities, and other supporting amenities that form part of the zone’s development master plan. The project’s development is expected to deliver significant economic impact for Subang Regency and its surroundings through increased industrial activity, growth of local supply chains, and by encouraging further investment in the manufacturing sector. Regarding employment, among its many benefits, the manufacturing facility is projected to absorb up to approximately 2,000 workers at graduate and technician levels. ‘Furthermore, the presence and operationalisation of this national car project there will also impact the mastery of electric-based automotive technology,’ he added. Sjafrie specifically expressed hope that all stakeholders would continue to strengthen synergy to accelerate the realisation of the strategic project, so that the economic, technological, and industrial benefits can be swiftly felt by the Indonesian people and nation.
