Defence Minister Asserts TNI Not Mercenary Force, Soldiers Paid by Public to Serve
BELITUNG TIMUR — Indonesia’s Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has asserted that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) are not a mercenary force, but rather professional soldiers committed to serving the state and the people.
In remarks to military personnel, Sjafrie emphasised that membership in the TNI is a calling of the soul, not merely employment for earning wages. Soldiers are expected to possess sincerity and dedication to service.
“Remember what I say. TNI soldiers are soldiers called from soul and body. You are not mercenary soldiers! You are professional soldiers! You are called not for salary, but to dedicate yourselves to the state and nation,” Sjafrie stated at Yon TP 845/Ksatria Satam, Simpang Renggiang, East Belitung, Bangka Belitung Islands, on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
He reminded personnel that many officers have set an example through their dedication to the TNI. According to Sjafrie, service in the TNI transcends mere state duty and constitutes an act of worship.
Concluding his remarks, Sjafrie praised the soldiers’ spirit and discipline. However, he expressed hope that the unit could continue developing, particularly in environmental stewardship. “I am not yet satisfied. I want to see your battalion as a green battalion. Not only soldiers in green uniforms, but a green environment,” he said.
For Sjafrie, this is important for building public trust in the TNI. He stressed that soldiers must not hurt the people’s feelings because the TNI originates from the people and will ultimately return to them.
“The people have given you life from your toes to the top of your head. But conversely, you must be able to serve and benefit the people regarding the life, security, and welfare of the Indonesian people,” he concluded.
